Water-based activities in West Sussex

The shores of West & East Wittering and Bracklesham Bay, plus the sailors playground of Chichester Harbour offer a chance to hit the water and enjoy your chosen sport, plus there's a variety of tuition and equipment hire on hand.

Sailing

Chichester Harbour is well known as a sailing destination, with sailing clubs dotting the shores at Bosham and Itchenor. The waters are relatively sheltered which make this an ideal place to begin or hone your sailing skills, or take part in racing during the annual Race Week, one of the most popular regattas in the UK. Cobnor Activities Centre offers lessons, group tuition, classes and camps of all kinds for all ages to learn to sail.

Kayaking and SUP (Stand Up Paddle board)

One of the best ways to enjoy kayaking and paddle boarding in the Chichester area of West Sussex are guided tours around Chichester Harbour. You'll get to grips with manoeuvring your kayak or paddle board, learn about tides and currents to help keep you safe, and you'll also get a different, and sometimes closer perspective of the wildlife that calls the harbour home. If you’re lucky you might encounter the local of group of harbour seals, though harbour users should ensure to give the seals plenty of space (at least 50 metres) to avoid disturbing them. 

Another great location for these sports is Chichester Canal. This tranquil waterway stretches 2 miles from Chichester Canal basin as far as Hunston, where you'll turn around and glide back again, passing swans, ducks, moorhens and other wildlife. You just need to purchase a day licence from the Canal Basin cafe and you're ready for a serene paddle along the canal. 

Surfing

There's a thriving surfing community in East Wittering and West Wittering, which you'll see if you visit here on a windy day and the waves are hitting just right.
