Exploring where Green meets Blue in the heart of Chichester. Your morning adventure begins at the canal, a vibrant artery offering paths for leisurely strolls and breathtaking views. For a unique perspective, why not embark on a delightful canal boat ride? It's not just fun; you'll be directly supporting the vital work of the Canal Trust. Hiring a rowing boat allows for self-guided exploration whilst enjoying the gentle rhythm of the water. Stay sharp and you might catch sight of the flash of a kingfisher, an elegant egret or a delicate dragonfly, and perhaps even a glimpse of deer or a shy fox amidst rare flora. Capture these moments with your camera and consider sharing your discoveries on iSpot, a platform where your observations can contribute to valuable citizen science projects like species monitoring and Bioblitzes.
Now for a little refreshment, nestled beside the Canal Heritage Centre, the Canal Café offers a perfect spot to pause. Alternatively, wander a short distance into the heart of Chichester and soak up the atmosphere, surrounded by the impressive 12th-century architecture of The Buttery. Just around the corner, the majestic Chichester Cathedral awaits and you might catch a glimpse of the resident Chichester Peregrines soaring above.
Afternoon
From the Cathedral's grandeur, a short hop on the number 51 bus whisks you away to the coastal charm of Selsey.
For bird enthusiasts and lovers of wide-open spaces, the RSPB Medmerry Reserve is a must-see. This remarkable reserve, born from an innovative coastal realignment project, offers a haven for wildlife and walkers alike. Explore its trails on foot, or consider cycling – App Bikes offers convenient hire with a drop-off point at RSPB Pagham, just a short stroll from the bus stop.
In Selsey, immerse yourself in hands-on conservation with Mulberry Marine Experiences' Citizen Science Day. Over two enriching hours, you'll contribute to vital projects: searching for fascinating egg cases, surveying the intertidal zone, hunting for microplastics, and recording kelp. You'll be guided by an SSI Ecology Instructor, and there's even time for a tour of the Selsey RNLI Lifeboat Station, learning about their crucial work.
Evening
All that fresh air and exploration is bound to have sparked an appetite! So why not enjoy a delectable seafood platter including the renowned Sesley Crab right on the beach from Potters (a pre-order is a must for this treat!), or enjoy your own picnic spread. For those crafting their perfect beach feast, you can find award-winning Sussex Skinny Finnies from Lady P's Picnic and Hamper Company at Manuka Wholefoods in Chichester, alongside fabulous Sussex wines from local vineyards Tinwood and Ashing Park. Now, imagine lingering as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking hues. Stay a while longer and let the incredibly clear, starlit skies work their magic – they were so captivating they inspired the legendary Sir Patrick Moore to make Selsey his home.
When you're ready, the number 51 bus will be waiting to whisk you back to Chichester, filled with the memories of a perfect coastal day.
Day 2
Morning
The majestic South Downs beckon! Imagine yourself amidst rolling hills and panoramic vistas, where a tapestry of walking trails and cycle routes unfolds before you. Afternoon
After lunch, prepare to step into an ancient and enchanting world at Kingley Vale Nature Reserve. Here, a magnificent yew forest, home to some of the oldest trees in Europe, awaits your discovery. Arrange a unique encounter with Southern E Bike rentals and glide through this timeless landscape on two wheels, or simply wander on foot, your camera in hand, ready to capture the majestic, twisted forms of these ancient giants. Let the tranquil sounds of the forest wash over you, and keep a keen eye out for flashes of green woodpeckers, the soaring grace of buzzards, or the watchful presence of red kites overhead. For a breathtaking finale to your afternoon, hop on your e-bike for a scenic 45-minute ride to Bow Hill. From this vantage point, prepare to be rewarded with unparalleled views stretching across the stunning countryside all the way to the shimmering expanse of Chichester Harbour and beyond.
