The Gardens Gatehouse at West Dean Estate, West Sussex is now open and ready to welcome visitors. The original gatehouse has been completely reimagined and relocated, creating a more inviting arrival point for the thousands of people who explore the estate each year. The new space has been designed to enhance the visitor experience from the moment you step inside.
How does the new entrance improve your visit?

What will you find outside?
Just beyond the entrance, the plant nursery offers a variety of plants inspired by the gardens themselves. It is an ideal place to pick up something special to take home, whether you are a seasoned gardener or simply love beautiful greenery.
Where is the new Gatehouse located?
The Gardens Gatehouse sits beside the existing visitor centre. The building itself has an interesting story, as it occupies the former biomass facility and has been thoughtfully adapted to create a sustainable, functional and characterful space.
How has the old biomass building been repurposed?
West Dean has a long history of environmental responsibility. In 1981, the estate installed one of the UK’s earliest woodchip‑fired biomass boilers, powered entirely by sustainably sourced materials from the estate. When a new Energy Centre was introduced in 2016, the original biomass building became available for reuse.
Rather than demolish it, West Dean chose to transform the structure into the new Gardens Gatehouse. Materials from the old facility have been reused to create shelving and furniture, and the building’s original character has been carefully preserved.
How is the new building powered and heated?
The Gatehouse uses LED lighting and is heated through the estate’s district heating system, which is supplied by the newer biomass facility. With electricity sourced from a renewable energy provider, the building has been designed to operate as sustainably as possible.
What developments are planned next at West Dean?
The Gardens Gatehouse is part of a wider plan to enhance the visitor experience across the estate. Future improvements include expanding the dining facilities to welcome more guests and continuing to serve produce grown at West Dean and sourced locally.
Celebrating a New Chapter
After months of planning and hard work, the Gardens Gatehouse is now open and ready to explore. It marks an exciting step forward in showcasing the creativity, heritage and landscape that make West Dean such a special place to visit.
