Your creative retreat awaits.

West Dean College of Arts and Conservation is an internationally recognised art college with a strong craft ethos offering over 800 short courses, from beginner to advanced level and ranging from a day, a weekend or an entire week.

Your opportunity to develop new skills in beautiful surroundings.

Many of our short courses are inspired by the season, and all are taught by expert tutors. You’ll typically take home ideas, techniques, new inspiration and your finished work to treasure.

From contemporary to traditional crafts, choose from Art, Craft, Textiles (including Tapestry), Photography, Furniture-making, Metalwork and Jewellery, Pottery and Ceramics, Gardening, Sculpture and much more. Some of our art and photography courses take you out into the Sussex Countryside. More unusual courses include Making a Devon Maund Basket, Sculpture from Scrap and Carving a Wooden String Puppet. Summer Schools in July and August offer you the ultimate immersive creative escape.

Students have access to fully equipped workshops and studios, a craft shop on site, and experience a dynamic hub of creativity with glimpses of other courses in action (and the chance to participate in a second course in Summer Schools).

“One of the 10 best creative retreats in the UK and Europe”, The Guardian, January 2019

The stunning setting of the South Downs and the award-winning Gardens provide an inspiring environment for an unforgettable creative escape. To make this the ultimate ‘staycation’, there are a number of residential options available, where guests can stay in one of the characterful rooms in the main house, or the adjacent charming Old Vicarage, and enjoy a delicious breakfast in the college dining hall.

Check out the list of short courses, and book your place today.
