Arundel

The picturesque and historic market town of Arundel is waiting to be explored.

Home to the famous Arundel Castle, Arundel Cathedral, Arundel Wetland Centre and a thriving antiques and art gallery scene, it’s easy to see why this historic market town draws such a crowd.

Where is Arundel?

Arundel, West Sussex, can be found nestled amongst the rolling hills of the South Downs Nation Park, just a 15-minute drive from the coast and a 20-minute drive from Chichester City Centre or the market town of Petworth.

If you’re coming from London, it’s just an hour-and-a-half’s train ride, making it the perfect location for a weekend getaway from the city.

Arundel Castle and Cathedral

Arundel Castle and Cathedral are both home to a thousand years of history, offering incredible insights into a time gone by.

With both buildings having strong ties to some of Britain’s most important characters (the Castle was founded by Roger ‘the Great’ de Montgomery – one of the greatest magnates in England during William the Conqueror’s reign, while the Cathedral was commissioned by Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal) there’s plenty to learn as you wander through the ancient corridors.

If you’re looking for great outdoor space, pay a visit to Arundel Castle Gardens or Arundel Wetlands, both providing views of nature at its very best year-round. Or, if you have children in tow, why not pay a visit to Arundel’s popular lido, offering fun for all ages.

Antiques, galleries, shops, cafes and more

On the main hill that is Arundel High Street, you’ll find an eclectic mix of antique and homeware shops, art galleries and bookshops, alongside coffee shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and much more.

Step onto the side streets to explore unique independent shops, bustling boutiques and cosy cafes. Or, head down the hill towards Arundel Wetlands to find the main entrance to Arundel Castle and Gardens, as well as Swanbourne Boating Lake and Arundel’s Black Rabbit Pub and Restaurant.

You can easily while away the hours on the cobbled streets of Arundel, or spend time exploring some of its many famous attractions. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be spending time in a quintessentially British market town, surrounded by history at every turn. We think it’s a win win either way.

Restaurants, hotels and pubs

As any great British market town would be, Arundel is home to a host of independent restaurants, pubs, cafes and hotels, as well as some more popular chains including the Premier Inn.

What makes Arundel so unique however, is its history, which can be admired at every turn.

Whether you’re looking to stay in or around Arundel, or are even looking for hotels near Arundel Castle, you’ll find something for you. There’s also something to tickle every taste bud – from Italian and Indian restaurants to cosy historic pubs and ice cream parlours, there’s something for all cravings and ages.

Antique shops

There’s no need to stop at history and eateries – Arundel is great for shopping too. While there are a range of independent shops and boutiques on offer, Arundel is famed for its antiques and contemporary art galleries, all housed within stunning historic buildings.

The South Downs National Park

For those who are, unsurprisingly, using Arundel as a base to explore the delights of the South Downs National Park, you’ll be pleased to know where are a huge range of outdoor activities on offer. From great walks and treks, to cycling and horse-riding, Arundel is the perfect base to explore further afield. The neighbouring market towns of Petworth and Midhurst are just a 20-minute and 30-minute drive respectively.
