Great Family Fun
The Great Sussex Way®
With so many different ways to experience The Great Sussex Way, here’s our suggestion for a fun-filled adventure to suit the whole family.
Discover the historic city of Chichester, with its Roman city walls, green spaces and array of shops and cafes. Chichester’s Canal offers scheduled boat trips, which are loved by adults and children alike – admire the local wildlife and learn about the history of this hidden waterway from the knowledgable staff. It’s also possible to hire row boats from the Canal basin, or try your hands at SUP with a family lesson on the canal.
Fishbourne Roman Palace
A short distance from Chichester are the remains of the largest Roman residence found in Britain, Fishbourne Roman Palace. Bring history alive as you take in the enormous collection of intricate mosaics, and try to imagine the opulence of the largest Roman home in Britain. Explore the recreated Roman gardens which are the earliest gardens found anywhere in the country.
Wonderful Weald & Downland Living Museum
This collection of rescued and carefully restored rural homes and buildings has something for the whole family. Immerse yourselves in stories of the past as you try to imagine life for the inhabitants of the homes. Visit the Museum’s animals – ducks, pigs, sheep, cows, geese and the magnificent heavy horses – you might even be lucky enough to see them in action.
Time for some seaside escapades to complete this family adventure. For bucket and spade fun, the twin shores of East and West Wittering are perfect. For West Wittering, be sure to pre-book parking via Just Park ahead of your visit. Both beaches have opportunities for water-sports on hand, with local operators offering equipment hire and tuition. Or simply soak up the unspoilt views out to sea. Refreshments, including the all important ice creams, are on hand at both locations. East Wittering’s high street has everything you need for a family picnic or sunset barbeque.
