Observer art critic and author Laura Cumming discusses her Rathbones Folio Prize-shortlisted memoir ‘On Chapel Sands’ in an exclusive event for Culture Spark, in partnership with Rathbones Chichester.
In Autumn 1929 a small child was kidnapped from a Lincolnshire beach. Five agonising days later, she was found, unharmed, in a nearby village. The child remembered nothing of these events; it was another fifty years before she even learned of the kidnap. The kidnapped girl later became an artist and had a daughter, art writer Laura Cumming. In ‘On Chapel Sands’ Laura brings the eye of an art critic to the analysis of family photographs, and in so doing unlocks a mystery almost a century old.
Laura has twice been shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize – in 2017 for The Vanishing Man: In Pursuit of Velazquez and for On Chapel Sands in 2020.
Part memoir, part detective story, Laura will discuss her prize-winning book and the art of creating a compelling narrative from real-life events with Minna Fry, Director of the Rathbones Folio Prize.
Tickets are £7.50 and are available through The Novium Museum box office : Ticketsolve – Chichester Boxoffice.
