Join the Weald & Downland Living Museum on Friday, 24 June to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the opening of the Downland Gridshell building!
Visitors on the day will be able to explore the works of Ted Cullinan and Steve Johnson (architects), Bruno Happold (Structural Engineers), E A Chiverton (Main Contractors) and The Green Oak Carpentry Company (Timber Structure Specialists). There will be talks and displays throughout the day from those who helped design and build the Downland Gridshell Building.
Downland Gridshell: The Museum’s award-winning Downland Gridshell Building was the first major timber gridshell building to be constructed in the UK. The building was completed in 2002 and was financially supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It is regarded as an iconic building and both architects and other interested visitors travel from across the UK (and further afield) to view this unique example of the technique.
The lower level of the Downland Gridshell Building houses the Museum’s collections of tools and artefacts from rural life in the Weald & Downland region.
A programme will be released two weeks prior to this activity.
